Robust Extents

The simple geometry of the robust form was devised to merge with the developing sub-urban context of Koswatte, Battaramulla. The design attempts efficient and optimum use of land, space and its construction materials; built on a 12 perch block of land bordering a bustling road on two sides; the foot print of the house is contained in under 6 perches; excluding allowance for road and rear space reservations by regulation.

Café UFO

The hill country is heavily covered based on the stories of King Rawana. Rawana Ella (waterfall), Rawana Cave and mini Adam’s Peak are key tourist destinations in Ella. It is a beautiful town in the hill country of Sri Lanka which is filled with tea estates, mountains, waterfalls and of course with some good air to breath. Lots of people make Ella as one of their must visit destination just to witness the breathtaking views it creates. It is a dream place for many trekkers with some of the best hikes the Island provides. This hidden village got vastly popular among the tourists lately. From what we understand, it is both celebrating and suffering due to explosive growth that often accompanies such places.

Urban Envelope

Sited in the vibrant city of Colombo is the ‘Urban Envelope’, the dwelling house of a metropolitan architect. With its univocal façade seamlessly weaving itself into the tight residential fabric of the city, the abode has been named for its distinct concealment from the dusty and noisy urban street life of Sri Lanka’s commercial capital.

Cube House

The rectangular cube has emerge from the bank of the lake to capture the view across the ripple of the water towards the lush greenery beyond. It is a place to relax and rejuvenate yourself, and enjoy the nature. The tranquility overwhelmed. Concrete and bricks raised from the bank of the lake is used as the main structure to get the maximum benefit of the view. The wide glass panels and elevated floor allows you to capture wide perspective from the living room and bed rooms as well as it links the nature and the building together.

Cement production is a tedious process that requires long hours of continuous manpower combined with heavy machinery that grind through. Among the leading industrialists in the construction sector, Holcim (Lanka) Ltd. has established a widespread network that spans from cement manufacturing to promoting sustainable design approaches in architecture.  Hence, the design and construction of a worker’s quarters for their factory located at Puttalam is an enthusiastic and ambitious venture, where architect Milinda Pathiraja has tested the phenomena in design manifestation as an ideal collaboration between architecture- a vision for possibility, and production- the practical implications in construction.

The Sober Island

The sober Island, located within territory of magnificent and historical Trincomalee harbor, encompasses an envious pedigree with a tapestry woven around a rich history & nostalgia.  Sober Island been located in a remarkable topography, island was used as a military fortification since 1672 until the British region. “Isle du Soleit” by French meaning “Island of Sun” still holds the French graves, World war II gun positions, underground ammunition storage complexes which reflects British Architectural components.

Dwelling at Kalapaluwawa

Dwelling at Kalapaluwawa is located in short distance suburbs from Colombo, designed for a doctor and an engineer where fulfilled 1,420 sqft  footprint out of 14 perch of land  by satisfying, x4 bed rooms, Living, Dining, pantry, kitchen, shrine area, library area, x2 parking slots and a servant’s area. Total gross area of the building 2,880 sqft. The land is sloppy, undulated and facing to a natural marsh, and land fringe by road and to a street perpendicular to the property.

Development in Science & technology fields of a country is required for national development & it is globally competitive. Sri Lanka is still a developing country and needs a catalyst to reach its development goals.  Most of the developed countries focus their attention on Research & development of Science & Technology. Their hi-tech production & hi-tech exports are massive in scale. Sri Lanka is at the bottom of it even though we have numerous resources including literate people in the field.

The Tamarind House

Architect’s own house designed in an urban area yet, with a natural setting covered with foliage where the name for the house was given as ‘Tamarind House’ accordingly. This is conceptually a response to the site which is at the end of a short road. Since the adjoining sites are bare lands the design was done predicting the outcome and turning the house inward to face a garden courtyard.

Number 25 – An Incremental Approach

The scheme was to renovate with new additions, the Architect’s ancestral home, sited on an approx. 22 Perch plot in the suburban city of Ratmalana, Sri Lanka. The 58 years aged house had been passed down for two generations with marginal additions & alterations.

Salgado House

The site being located in a tight urban context the architect has opted to manipulate modern architectural principles in his design concept as to make sure that the building would adopt the tropical climate.  Taking leaves out of concepts like minimalism, simplicity, clean lines, materiality and detailing as architectural application the architect has strengthened his main concept of modernity in residential architecture creating openness with in the building as well. The simple structure and the neatness of the spaces created with in the building has made this initial design concept much more expressive through the building.

Resort Hotel at Calido Beach, Kalutara

Kalutara being a coastal city close to Colombo while having the beautiful Calido beach and Kalu ganga nearby, it is vastly potent to be developed as a tourist destination similar to Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna and Mirissa. This particular resort proposal for the Calido beach is the initial step of this long- running mission.

The Paintshop

Hardware is storage full of different materials. But have you seen a hardware that has display and storage both together? The task of transforming a cluttered hardware store into a unique display store is what Archt. Kosala Weerasekara undertook with the Paintshop project in Kaluthara. Situated along the Galle Road in Kaluthara junction the store was right in the middle of the town that needed an attractive face to capture the wandering eye and the needy mind.

House 412

This 4 bedroom residential design – crafted of brick and concrete – has been formally conceived of as a ‘wall’ expanded along its Cartesian coordinates, an object of three dimensional complexity, not just a planar element.  Moving away from the typical anti-urban stance of placing a house inside a tall perimeter wall, this design places the main structural elements perpendicular to the street (in plan), thereby immediately opening the street façade at the pedestrian level. A linear circulation spine starting from this street-entrance runs the length of the house: this is the principle organisational strategy dividing the house into ‘served and servant (service) spaces’.
